Salvador Larroca Polaris
For the record, I *still* hate this
uniform. But I love Salvador's art, so I can live with it.
Knowing that I loathe it, you may find it strange that this is the
second action figure I've done with Polaris in this costume but 1) Sal
changed the costume a bit (for the better) 2) I found the perfect
figure and 3) It's my time so why the heck not?
Anywho.... The base figure for this was a Marvel Legends Storm
figure. The first thing I did was artfully mangle her cape to
give it that Darkstalkers look. This was accomplished with
scissors. Now Storm likes to attach her cape at the shoulders and
the wrists so I popped those suckers off her hands which left me with
these rubbery loops. At first I thought "hey, I'll just attach
'em to her arms and paint 'em silver so they will look like the little
metal loopy things Polaris has!" but then I thought "geeze, you're
cheap. That'd be cheesy." So I got two metal jump rings,
used pliers to open 'em and slipped them through the loops before
closing them again with pliers. Then I took needle and thread and
sewed the rubbery loop up. Why the troublesome sewing you
ask? Well because ToyBiz uses this stuff that is totally immune
to commercial adhesives. That's why. (yikes...look at all this
typing and I'm still on the freakin' cape!).
I then fired up the trusty Dremel-like rotary tool. I used that
the smooth out Storm's boots because they looked like a back country
road in West Virginia after the rainy season. In other
words: They were chunky, blocky, pocked...whatever. I used
the Dremel to also remove the X's on Storm's shoulders.
Next I took epoxy putty and extended the top of her boots, added
garters, sculpted her bustier, neck bandana, and arm bands. When
that had dried I sanded down everything then used the polishing bit for
the Dremel to get things nice and smooth. If I had it to do all
over again (which I might because I'm crazy like that) I would
have taken the time to sand down her clevage more and maybe have given
her a bit of a breast enhancement since Sal's Lorna is kind of ...um...
breastalicious?
In defense of the paint job - the color in real life is much closer to
the color in the comics. I should know - I spent a LOT of time
mixing colors to get it just right. When she was all painted up I
tacked the rings on her cape to her arms with some epoxy.
Whew....I think that's it. If you're still with me I've included
a before and another after picture below!
