Rants and Raves. Theories. Conspiracies. Opinion.

Our first official entry deals with a weighty issue and was written by yours truely (meaning this is mine, it came from my brain, steal it at your peril). I present:

THE MAGNETO CONSPIRACY

(or my theory on the origin of Lorna Dane)

After Mesmero's plot was brought to light, and his Magneto revealed to a robot, it was assumed that Lorna is not Magneto's daughter. The story goes that her parents died in a plane crash only weeks after her birth, and she was raised by her aunt and uncle. This raises the first question: why were her parents flying away from her only weeks after her birth? or perhaps she was with them and survived the crash? Either way it doesn't ring quite true. (perhaps the machinations of Mr Sinister, or a poorly made cover story designed to hide her true origins?)

In X-Men #249 we find that Lorna is not without surviving family. Zaladane claims to be her sister, and the claim is later substanciated by Moira MacTaggart, who upon examing a now magnetic-less Lorna assures her that Zala must be her sister for the transference of powers to be possible at all (X-Men #254). This is where the question of Magneto comes back into being. For Zaladane also planned to steal the Master of Magnetism's powers, and steal them she did, in small doses (X-Men #275). However, Magnus kills her, thereby ending the transfer. So if you subscribe to logic, you must figure that Magnus, Lorna, and Zala are all related. [if a=b, and b=c it follows that a=c] No? Let me know what you think.

When I first put this section up I anticipated it becoming a forum where Polaris fans could bounce their ideas and theories off one another. I have since recieved a wonderful addition to this section! Please welcome the theories of Joerg Schneider!

POWERS OF POLARIS
One could argue that Polaris is not a true mutant but a mutate, cause she was put in the mutant energy stimulator (MES) in Uncanny X-Men #50; but obviously she was a mutant before : she had green hair and cerebro reacted to her in #49. To be a mutant the power/mutation does not have to be terrific or cool (anybody remembers Lucy from the Beauty and the Beast a.k.a. Dazzler & Beast limited series ?, her power was to make flowers change their colours!). So, her mutation is the hair, her latent powers were
 a) magnetic manipulation,
 b) absorbing negative-emotional energy and transforming it intostrength and stamina.
If you read again #50 you will find that "the mutant energy stimulator will stir to life her EVERY LATENT power". What I think
happened is that it just did that both latent powers were brought to their peek, but in genetics sometimes different attributes coexist or mix (Nightcrawler -> appearance inherited from Mystique + own mutation of teleporting, some flowers red and white crossed will come out pink) and others cancel each other out, one attribute dominates over the other (most bloodtypes for example one gene A and one gene O produces a person AO which appears as bloodtype A) Lornas mutations belong to
the second group: the magnetic powers dominated, the emotional-energy-feeding lay dormant. When Zaladane tampered with her (with the help of a device build by Brainchild who does not ensure it will function purposely, #250 "This device is
extrapolated from design conceptions I barely comprehend") the magnetic powers were regressed to the latent stage and the emotion powers finally emerged. In #254 Moira says that the magnetic powers are still there but latent. After the Shadow King's overusing of these powers by making her his Nexus and the psychic blade of Psylocke, these powers get disrupted -> the magnetic powers again are on top.
Her origin / Zaladane her sister ?
First I have to say, everytime a plot like that changes back and forth and back and ... it weakens. See how boring Jean Grey became after dying, being reborn, truly reappaering, dying again, ....Or who is now after 20 years of mystery and tue or implanted memorys still intrested in the past of Wolverine. So I think all the up till now established informations should be used.
Facts:
1) Polaris did not know about Zaladane being her sister. She was as surprised as the readers. (#250)
2) Iceman spoke to her adoptive parents (off-panel) in Uncanny X-Men #52.
"I went to your home! Questioned your folks! Read the newspaper files! Your parents were killed in a plane crash only weeks after you were born! Your fathers sister and her husband brought you up!
3) Lornas new parents did not tell her about her adoption till her twenties -> Lorna lived under her adoptive parents name "Dane" or otherwise she must have known before. Her biological parents name was not "Dane".
4) Zaladane knew about Lorna. #249"I've searched the world for you, dear sister"
5) #250 "Havok - even through his drug haze - can't help but admit the resemblance" between Zaladane and Polaris.
6) #254 dialog Polaris-Moira "who also claims to be my long lost sister. _
Actually she'd have to be to pull this off no other way the genetic structure would be compatible.
Evidence against fact 6)
- Moira never meets Zaladane.
- Moira never examines the device used for the transfer.
- We even have another popular case, that even to transfer /steal powers you do not to be related - ROGUE, because it is part of her own power.

POSSIBILITY 1
Moira made an error in #254 not knowning that Zala had through Brainchilds device improved power-stealing powers like Rogue, but without any transfer of psyche or memories.

LORNA AND ZALA ARE NOT BLOOD_RELATED AT ALL; ZALA HAD THE
(TECHNOLOGICAL-IMPROVED) POWER TO STEAL OTHER'S POWERS.

But then why doesn't she absorb other people's powers as well ? She held other X-Men captive as well ?

Okay, so here my favourite theory:
POSSIBILITY 2

Zala is a true child of the Danes, but about 10 years older than Lorna; I suppose Zala ran away (when Lorna was 1-3 years old) from the Danes because she felt unwanted after Lorna arrived in the family: the big secret about her hair, which needed special attention and much time of the parents, before she was an only-child, etc. The Danes never told Lorna about that not to make her feel guilty. As it seems the Danes kept pretty much from Lorna, doesn't it.
This would explain:
- Zala's hatred for Lorna
- Zala last name being Dane, but out of dislike of her parents in her early appearances she was only named Zala, and later out of Zala Dane she made Zaladane.
- Zala knowing about Lorna, but not vice versa
This would make Zala and Lorna adoptive sisters (#249 "DEAR SISTER"), but by blood relation cousins Lornas father and Zalas mother are siblings maybe even twins. I hope close enough for Moira MacTaggert.

ZALA IS THE TRUE CHILD OF THE DANES, WHILE LORNA GOT ADOPTED WHEN HER OWN
PARENTS (BROTHER AND SISTER-IN-LAW OF MRS. DANE) DIED. THUS THEY ARE SISTERS
BY ADOPTION AND COUSINS BY BLOOD.

Now at last, and a small one, why do her parents leave her a few weeks after her birth: Many possibilities:
- Late honeymoon for her parents
- Parents of to a funeral in the family, they do not want to have the baby face the stress of flight
- etc.
So much for that right now

Do you have something to say regarding Lorna Dane? Perhaps an essay about why she has green hair? Or maybe you have some theories as to her real name? Mail it to me and I'd be happy to look it over and put it up for discussion on this page. All points brought up here are open for discussion, and feedback is welcomed and will be posted in the future.
