UNCANNY X-MEN #418 & #419

Alex Summers is back. So you can probably guess where this review is going.
Anyway, Polaris breaks into the X-Mansion, crazy, Alex-obsessed, and malicious. (Yes, I used that word on purpose). The Polaris I know wouldn't run around threatening innocent nurses with scapels, even if her EX-boyfriend appeared to be in danger. She was always more level-headed than that even where Alex was concerned.  I'm sure many of you are applauding the writers for making her into a "stronger" character, but in Lorna's case why does stronger always have to mean evil?
"I really don't appreciate being judged by a lesser species." What the hell is that? Polaris has dedicated her life to improving mutant/human relations and protecting humans often at great personal sacrifice.  This just doesn't sound like something she would say. Really. You could argue that her new homo superior stance is a product of her time spent with Magneto but I found the portrayal of her during that time more "in-line" with what I would expect from Polaris.  While she was willing to help Magneto, she very clearly maintained her own set of morals and often worried about the methods that Magneto used.
This is the kind of casting that really gets me down.  I can see the Marvel creative meeting right now:

"We need a crazy chick. Like, totally psycho."
"Yeah."
"But, like, one that the X-Men kinda know, y'know? So it will really bum them out."
"Yeah."
"Hey, did we kill Polaris off?"
"Uh...I don't think so."
"Cool."

This issue really bummed me out because it firmly illustrated a fact that I have been loathe to admit. Polaris is NOT my favorite Marvel character. Peter David's Polaris is my favorite. Period.
